Where and how we live so deeply defines our relationship not only to ourselves, but to others and even to God. Stable, safe housing affords us the opportunity for refuge, growth, and connection.

The rabbis of the Talmud knew there would be times when we would have no choice but to build our sukkot beneath a thick shadow cast by mountains. They knew there would be moments when it would feel audacious to build a sukkah at all.

The connection between Sukkot and immigration is incredibly rich.

Sukkot, as a moment of joy with God, is an essential last step of the process of divine judgment and forgiveness.

The illusion of security, the illusion of living in a world not deeply steeped in racism, and the comfort of staying committed to our illusions ultimately cuts us off from the fullest joy of life radically open and in relation to that which is. 

This work is essential, now more than ever. But this work is also exhausting. Just like the holiday of Sukkot, our world is also one of contradictions. There is good within all the chaos, although right now it might be hard to see.
