Jewish Clergy Against ICE Raids and Military Suppression of Protests

We, the undersigned Jewish clergy in the United States, including 77 in California and 28 in Greater Los Angeles, wholeheartedly condemn the indiscriminate and violent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that have occurred in Southern California and throughout the United States, and the incursion of soldiers under the command of President Donald Trump into Los Angeles

We are disturbed and horrified at the deployment of up to 4,000 California National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines in LA County to repress peaceful and courageous protesters. This excessive use of force is not only unnecessary, as protests have been largely peaceful according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), but it was also unconstitutional because it bypassed the consent and authority of California Governor Gavin Newsom and local governments. Those of us in LA, on the front lines of these protests, know that President Trump’s abuse of power has only escalated the situation.

Many of the protesters are either immigrants or the children, family, friends, and community members of immigrants. They and we are righteously angry about a heartless immigration enforcement system of policing, incarceration, and deportation that is ripping families apart. Our Jewish tradition and values demand that we show up unwaveringly with immigrants, and that we fiercely protect the right to free speech and protest

A story from the Midrash (ancient commentaries and interpretations of the Hebrew Bible), found in Yalkut Shimoni 13:2, tells us that God created the first human being out of dust from the four corners of the earth so that “if one comes from the east to the west and arrives at the end of his life as he neared departing from the world, the land will not say to him, ‘The dust of your body isn’t mine. Go back to where you were created!’ Rather, every place a person goes, a part of them is from there and a part of them is returning there.” Our tradition tells us that, from the beginning, God formed us with the right to move and migrate with dignity, and the very earth of our bones testifies to our shared belonging.

The right to free speech is a cornerstone of our Constitution and democracy, and deploying the military to stop peaceful protests is a major violation of citizens’ (and non-citizens’) rights and a page right out of the authoritarian playbook. We’ve seen this before: using violent law enforcement and police intervention, punishing dissent with bogus investigations and threats to the funding of universities, denying due process, and more. All of it is part of the same draconian, fascist agenda this administration has enacted to tear families and communities apart and cultivate an atmosphere of fear.

This costly and violent showdown instigated between protesters and law enforcement is designed to distract from the insidious mass deportation agenda being implemented. Indeed, this wave of protests was sparked by reports on Friday, June 6 that ICE conducted raids in the LA area, and law enforcement arrested local labor leader SEIU California President David Huerta as he was observing a raid against a workplace. We are seeing the Trump regime enact this draconian plan from LA to San Antonio, brutally mistreating community members from children to elected officials like Senator Alex Padilla.

These ICE raids and the mass deportation machine are harming people indiscriminately: Parents, children, and students are getting caught up in it; people are being swept up as they attend routine immigration check-ins and court hearings, go to work, and run their errands.

Like today’s immigrants and refugees, our diverse and multiracial ancestors came to this country to escape persecution and poverty, and seek a dignified and meaningful life. So many of them were likewise branded as outsiders and faced discrimination until their contributions to our country became clear, and for those of us who are Jewish clergy of color, the varied communities to which we also belong may have other profound connections to immigration history and justice. Sadly, because of bigotry, laws were passed to prevent Jews from coming to the US just when they needed sanctuary the most. Many died in the Holocaust because of this.

In their name, we say Never Again For Anybody. With the Jewish poet Emma Lazarus, we say, “Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.”
