In the U.S., we the people choose our leaders. That’s the fundamental promise of democracy. And right now, our democracy is under attack — from the federal government and many state governments, and by movements that feel threatened by multiracial democracy’s vision of equitable and thriving futures for America’s diverse communities.
You and your community can make a difference by staffing your local polling place, which helps ensure that elections run smoothly and that every vote gets counted. Here are five reasons to work the polls this fall:
- You can help voters who may need additional support at the polls. Without enough poll workers, communities can face long lines, reduced access, and/or limited voting hours.
- It’s an opportunity to give back and support your kehillah, community. (In some states, you can also get paid.) You can help ensure fair, safe, and smooth elections for the people closest to you.
- Your supportive presence will reassure voters that the system is working. Many people are anxious about efforts to undermine the election, but seeing you, a neighbor and nonpartisan volunteer, will provide a sense of calm and relief.
- Meet your neighbors! This is a unique chance to connect with the people in your neighborhood and make new friends.
- Be part of history. This election cycle may be the most consequential in our lifetime. You have the opportunity to protect the integrity of our democratic process.
