The selection of David Friedman as U.S. Ambassador to Israel represents a threat to the security of Israelis, Palestinians, and Jews everywhere. The policies he supports—from the expansion of settlements to the annexation of the West Bank to the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem—not only violate decades of U.S. policy, but also will only fuel resentment and could even provoke violence. Despite his claims to be “pro-Israel,” Mr. Friedman proposes policies that endanger the future of both Israel and its relationship with the United States.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of Israel’s military victory in the 1967 Six Day War, we look for inspiration to the biblical yovel year, the fiftieth year of the agricultural cycle, with its declarations of liberty and release. In this fiftieth year, we dedicate ourselves to seeking liberty for both Israelis and Palestinians, to finding release from the pain of the past fifty years, and to moving forward toward peace and justice for both peoples.
The selection of Mr. Friedman is a step in the wrong direction—a step likely to lead to an escalation in the conflict, and a threat to the very possibility of peace, liberty, security, and justice for all Israelis and Palestinians.
