T’ruah’s Human Rights D’var Torah Writing Fellowship is an opportunity for current rabbinical and cantorial students to hone their d’var Torah writing skills in a human rights context. Each rabbinical school offers its own training in homiletics, but what is unique about teaching Torah when you are also trying to affect people’s political consciousness? How can you offer deep, serious Torah and also comment on the world around you at the same time? Join students from across campuses and movements to learn with expert rabbis and build community.
In this inaugural year, fellows will:
- Participate in two Zoom learning sessions scheduled during school vacations.
- Write one d’var Torah for publication in T’ruah’s (M)oral Torah weekly series, which reaches nearly 3000 readers. (The book of Bamidbar awaits!) There is no compensation for participation, other than the privilege of being published.
- Receive individual mentorship and editing from an experienced human rights rabbi as you write, as well as occasional small-group peer consultation.
Key dates:
- Applications due: Monday, December 18
- Fellows notified: Friday, December 22
- Zoom seminar 1: Week of January 2
- Zoom seminar 2: Thursday or Friday, April 25 or 26 (chol hamoed Pesach)
- Final version of your d’var Torah due: Before you disappear for the summer, or two weeks before your publication date
- Publication of divrei Torah: June-July
Attendance at both Zoom seminars is mandatory.
