This Thursday, Jews observe Tisha B’Av, the annual commemoration of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE and 70 CE. Pro-democracy protesters in Israel have taken to calling the current assault on democracy “churban haBayit” — literally, “the destruction of the house,” the term used for the destruction of the Temple.

Shany Granot-Lubaton is leading the protests against the judicial coup in Israel from New York City. In Israel she was deputy director of the Darkenu movement and chief of staff of the former head of the Israeli opposition, Shelly Yechimovich.
