Long before Rabbi Moshe Avigdor Amiel (1883-1946) became Chief Rabbi of pre-state Tel Aviv, he had a fraught encounter with a wounded soldier. A young rabbi at the time, Rabbi Amiel was riding a train in Europe during World War I when he had this experience, which changed his life and also transformed the way he understood the Book of Jonah.

Join Rabbi Jill Jacobs on Tuesday, September 3, at 2:30 PM ET to study Rabbi Amiel’s moving and provocative essay about this experience.

Together, we will read and discuss the essay, particularly for its insight about the Book of Jonah’s essential questions: Can we feel empathy for those who threaten us? Can we resist the urge to flee from the call of God?
